Constellation Toy Chest
A truly unique and custom piece. This is one my favorites for many reasons: the challenge of design and construction with its coopered lid and tapered sides reminiscent of a pirates chest, the eye-catching contrast of blonde Curly Maple against the chocolate-brown Walnut, but most of all the constellations embedded into the front of the chest.
My client, a retired professor of Astronomy commissioned this for the birth of his first grandchild. Each brass dot represents a specific stars position in our hemisphere on the date and time of his grandchild’s birth. The largest brass disc represents the sun’s position in the sky, and if you look closely, in the lower right corner, you’ll see Orion and his belt. This is an heirloom to be prized and this is his legacy.
